Every family is going to be different in their needs and this post may cause a little anxiety. Please know I am not looking to ask you to switch as I don't know what will happen with our family yet.
We as a family use a ton of plastic straws. I have found a couple that can be removed from sippy cups that we send through the dishwasher, but I still think about leaching and breakdown every time I pull them out.
In comes the Bamboo Straws.
These come from Zone - 365 and are listed as biodegradable, dishwasher safe and kid friendly. We will put the "kid friendly" part to test in this house for sure!
They give you a brush if you want to hand wash them (or I'm guessing in my house, you need to get fruit, a marble, or something stuck out of it.)
They are not supposed to rot and are noted as being an alternative to plastic, glass and stainless steel.
Even better - They could last you up to a year!
For around $10 - if they work for your family that's a steal!
Once we have received them and put them through the tests we will come back with our verdict!
We are Back with an initial test result:
As expected; they are really hard with no give. This is fine for me because one chomp will remind me not to do that again. However my son forgot every now and then and would complain.
It was really fun to look at them because they are all different sizes in diameter. This is completely understandable because they are 100% made by Artisans. Having said this; it is best to clean the insides out with the included brush, blow them out, and then at least rinse them. Everyone I did this to cleaned out the residual dust and removed any blockages.
A couple of them had small spots at the end that were splintered, but this was easily taken care of and wasn't a deal breaker since these are handmade and have been shipped a couple of times. Also..... plastic straws break in the same fashion ......
With them being handmade there are more variations in color and shape. The coloration is really what is going to get my family. One must have come from a spotted tree (is that possible with Bamboo? I need to look into that more) because it has little dots all over it which will at some point end the life of this particular straw because one of my family members will think it is rotten.
After the first round through the dishwasher they look great!
At this time, I would say that these bamboo straws will be a good replacement for most of our family. They will not work for my daughter as she forgets not to bite when she is working with straws (she is non-oral due to aspiration, but i working on the functions of things) This will however work for the rest of my family because if we forget, it will only take one time.
I will be keeping the plastic straws that we have to help my daughter learn techniques.
I hope this review has helped you.
We received this product for our honest opinion of Zone - 365 bamboo straws.
